HNUE Research and achievements

HNUE has been striving to be the leading renowned center in educational and research activities in Vietnam and the region, thereby being an active facilitator in the country’s modernization and development in the 21st century. In doing so, the University currently pursues core values of creativity and pioneering research. Research is deemed of equal importance as academics to the mission of the University. In the early years of development, the HNUE set the goal of becoming “a scientific research center and an important educational science experiment center” of the new revolutionary education and science. The University determined that in order to build a leading, highly-ranked University, it needed to actively conduct scientific research, and embarked on scientific research from the very beginning to build the foundation for the University. Accordingly, during Vietnam’s resistance war against the US (1954-1974), science enjoyed a predominant position in the University’s activities with a higher number of scientific projects, despite financial and technological shortages. The 1960s and 1970s were also the periods when many pioneering textbooks were compiled for many areas of natural sciences, social and humanities, and education in Vietnam. From 1975 to 1985, given the task of building a key and standardized pedagogical university, scientific research was directed to serve education training and other fields in the cause of national construction and defense. During this period, although the country faced many difficulties in the post-war recovery and dealing with the wounds left by the wars, difficult research conditions, and lack of references, scientific research activities were always stressed, making proud contributions to the science sector of the country. In particular, the University focused on building “scientific spearheads” for each faculty and department; and developing educational science by combining science, nature, and math with educational science. From 1986 to the present, as a national leading university, the University has paid special attention to innovative methods of training, research, and cooperation, marking a clear development step on the way to becoming an exemplary and active multidisciplinary research university. More recently, innovation and international integration in research and technological affairs have been strongly emphasized in the University Development Strategy.

Number of research projects from 1956 to 2021

Over 70 years, the University has undertaken thousands of national and provincial-funded projects at ministerial levels. In the last five years, the University has always been one of the 10 universities managed by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training producing the largest number of international publications indexed in the Web of Science list. The diversity of an institution’s research collaborations with other institutions in different locations of the world has been expanded significantly, including partners from Australia, Belgium, China, North America, the Netherlands, France, Russia, etc. Upon this time, the University’s research priority areas have been built on existing research strengths and the main areas for Vietnam’s socio-economic development. Since the 1986 Doi Moi, core research areas have been selected to address the national needs of Vietnam, in alignment with the Vietnamese Government’s 5-Year-Socio-Economic Development Plans and 10-year Socio-Economic Development Strategies.

Numbers of scientific publications (2001 – 2021)

In the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0, the research priorities have been decided taking into account the current strengths of research at HNUE that can be constructed to constitute a powerful base towards the transformation of the national economy into a knowledge-based economy. Both priority categories aim to promote interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research as well as establish new milestones for global impact, and innovation.
