Workshop on Testing and Assessment in High School Mathematics with a Focus on Quality and Competency Approach

During August 23-24, 2024, the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) and Hanoi National University of Education jointly organized a Workshop on Testing and Assessment in High School Mathematics with a Focus on Quality and Competency Approach. The workshop is part of a series of activities supporting the implementation of the 2018 General Education Curriculum for Mathematics with the goal of improving the quality of testing and assessment under the new curriculum.

The workshop attracted the participation of more than 500 delegates, including experts, lecturers, and teachers from various educational institutions across the country. Notably, the workshop was also attended by Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Duc Son, President of Hanoi National University of Education, and Prof. Ngo Bao Chau, Scientific Director of VIASM, who has played a crucial role in promoting Vietnamese mathematics on the international stage. This event provided an opportunity for delegates to update and exchange information about modern methods of testing and assessment in mathematics, contributing to the development of a comprehensive education system and enhancing students' competencies.

Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Duc Son, President, delivered an opening speech

At the workshop, leading experts such as Prof. Do Duc Thai, Prof. Le Anh Vinh, Dr. Le Tuan Anh, Prof. Cung The Anh, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Chi Thanh, and Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Kim Son presented invited reports, ranging from comparing the 2006 Mathematics curriculum (old curriculum) and the 2018 Mathematics curriculum (new curriculum) to developing specification tables for competency assessment and applying digital technology in designing assessment tools for mathematics.

The seminar also dedicated a training day to design Math assessment questions oriented towards quality and competency approaches. The delegates, who were teachers and professional management staff, had the opportunity to practice and exchange experiences with lecturers and experts in Mathematics education.
